About
Short rounds, clear feedback, and practice you can repeat—with or without an account.
What is words?
words is a web game for learning English vocabulary in short rounds you can finish in a few minutes. Each round is a set of quick questions—pick the best synonym, the right opposite, or (where available) the word that matches a definition. You get immediate feedback after every answer and a short summary when the round ends, so you see what went well and what to revisit.
You choose difficulty (CEFR levels or a range) and task type before you start, so practice matches the level you want.
Who is it for?
Anyone who prefers active, bite-sized practice to long videos or passive reading—commuters, evening learners, people brushing up for work or study. You can try the full play loop without registering; an account is there when you want progress to follow you across visits and devices.
Play without an account (“guest”)
- No signup required: open the site and start a round.
- Same gameplay: pick difficulty and task type, play full rounds, see feedback and round summaries.
- Score in this browser: your total score (one point per correct answer on completed rounds) and Stats apply to this browser session while your guest cookie is active—open Stats after you have started playing at least once.
- Leaderboard: you still appear on time windows you qualify for, with a fun random nickname and avatar so the board stays readable without exposing your real name.
Guests should know: clearing site data, another browser, or a different device starts fresh unless you later link that play to an account.
When signing in helps
Creating an account with email or Google is optional, but it adds persistence and a few extras:
- Progress follows you: totals, completed rounds, accuracy, streaks, and breakdowns by task type and level are stored on your account, not only in one browser tab.
- Merge guest play: if you sign up while your guest session is still active, rounds and total score from that session can be merged into the new account (see the note on Stats when you are logged out vs in).
- Game profile on Me: choose your nickname and avatar (presets, a generated look, or your Google photo after you connect Google) instead of the random guest pairing.
- Rate puzzles: after you submit an answer, you can mark items helpful or not so we can fix mistakes and improve the catalog—signed-in players only.
- Account settings: manage how you sign in from the Me area.
If you only want a quick tryout, staying a guest is fine. If you plan to come back often, signing in avoids “losing” weeks of score when you switch laptops or phones.
Leaderboard and fair play
The leaderboard ranks players by correct answers in finished rounds over 24 hours, 3 days, or 7 days (UTC). It is meant as light motivation, not a high-stakes exam—focus on steady practice and levels that challenge you without frustration.
Offline and install
The app needs an internet connection to load tasks and save answers. Some browsers let you add the site to your home screen for an app-like icon; you still play online. More detail is on the FAQ page.
Privacy
We only keep what we need to run sessions, accounts, stats, and—when the operator turns it on—coarse usage analytics on public pages. See Privacy for how cookies, sign-in, and gameplay data are handled.
